Hi

As you may or may not be aware of the processors (CPUs) in the compute-nodes
of the Ekman cluster will be replaced in order to make the nodes meet
contracted power-limits. This work is planned to be carried over the coming
two to three weeks. During this period there will be a significant reduction
of available compute nodes and jobs longer than about 48h will not be
startable. We will also take advantage of this unavoidable outage to perform
significant software updates.

In summary the following tasks will be performed:
a) Replacement of the current AMD Opteron 2354 CPUs with AMD Opteron 2374HE
b) Upgrade the OS version of the nodes from CentOS 5.2 to CentOS 5.3
c) Update of all relevant firmware.
d) Replace /cfs/testscratch with a new access path for the cluster-wide
scratch filesystem (more details will follow).

the impact of which is:
a) Peak power usage reduction with about 25% while maintaining at least the
same performance as before.
b) No immidiate user impact is expected.
c) No user impact is expected (but upgrade is a prerequisite of the CPU
upgrade).
d) Change of path-names in scripts will be necessary - the change also
reflects the move from test-phase to production-state of the filesystem.

If you have any questions, don't hesistate to contact
