<font size="2"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Dear Vagn users,</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Two new Vagn nodes (a7 and a8) are now available for pilot testing during the summer (July/August).</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">CPU: 4 x AMD Opteron 6128 HE "Magny-Cours" @ 2.0 GHz (32 cores per node)</span>.<br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">RAM: 256 GB per node</span>.<br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">We encourage all Vagn users to test their applications on the new nodes during the pilot test.</span></font>
<font size="2"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">All Vagn users can now use these nodes. To run jobs on the new nodes during the pilot test, use the "pilot" partition. Examples:</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
interactive -n 1 -t 8:00:00 -p pilot</span></font>
<font size="2"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">sbatch -p pilot myscript.sh</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">The
"pilot" partition allows node sharing, so if you need an entire node
you need to allocate a whole node, e.g by specifying 1 node and 32
cores: interactive -N 1 -n 32 -t 8:00:00 -p pilot</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Important note: if you have built your own applications with
machine-specific optimization (e.g "icc -xSSE3"), you will probably need
to recompile them.</span></font>
<font size="2"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">An application that is optimized for the wrong platform will fail with an error message similar to this:</span></font>
<font size="2"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">> Fatal Error: This program was not built to run on the processor in</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">

> Swing New Instructions support.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">If you need to recompile
your binaries, performance should in most cases be good enough if you
compile using "-O2 -ip -xW". This will result in binaries that will work
on all nodes.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">NSC has performed basic testing of the default version of all
applications available through the module system, and they all seems to
work except for ParaView and VisIt.</span></font>
<font size="2"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">If you find other
NSC-provided binaries (i.e applications available through "module add"
or found in /software) that does not work on the new nodes, please
report this to </span><a href="mailto:vagnekman-support@snic.vr.se">vagnekman-support@snic.vr.se</a><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">. We will try to have all applications working on the new nodes before pilot testing ends,</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
